About us

Umweltinstitut München e.V.

The Munich Environmental Institute (Umweltinstitut München) was founded in 1986, shortly after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, with the objective of investigating and reducing environmental pollution as a whole. Its founding was motivated by the search for independent information on radiation exposure and the intention to minimize the health risks from Chernobyl. Since then independent measurements of the cesium content in food are regularly conducted and the results are published.

Soon after the founding, we expanded our activities to other areas of environmental concern. Today our main issues are nuclear energy, radiation, climate change, energy policy, agriculture, genetic engineering, trade policy and consumer protection.

We are a registered citizen based organization (CBO), also known as a non governmental organization (NGO) with about 20 employees. Our primary financial support comes from our donors and 9000+ sponsoring members. Additionally, certain projects are financed by the City of Munich.

You can support our commitment to the environment and our independent institute by making a regular donation. As a donor/member, you will receive all our updates and information on our new research and we will answer your individual questions concerning environmental pollution and other problems.
